the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.
We all long for purpose. We are born with a longing to know why we exist.
For much of my life I was looking for ‘my purpose’. At times it weighed so heavily that I felt purposeless; especially when my life was not revolving around some big thing that people were in awe of.
And then a realization. An empowering realization…
Purpose in life is not something that’s measured by others. We are born with it.
Our purpose, the reason we exist, is to reflect the image, will and glory of Elohim, God our creator.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. -Genesis 1:27
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. -Ephesians 2:10
Until we surrender to the saving grace of Jesus Christ, our soul is lost and searching to find its purpose; seeking validation in other places, looking for our reason for existing. We see it in things like…
- Trying to please people so they will love and accept us
- Performing to gain validation in the eyes of the world
- Striving to be the best
Even as believers, we can find ourselves wandering down these very same paths in pursuit of purpose; feeling as if we need to prove our value and worth. This is a life driven in search of personal fulfillment and validation.
Albert Einstein said, “A life directed chiefly towards the fulfillment of personal desires will sooner or later always lead to bitter disappointment” (Letter to T. Lee, Jan. 16, 1954).
This was my story, my journey. My heart had been given to Christ, but my head said I had to prove my worth.
My performing for others, striving for perfection, and seeking to please people delivered temporary love and acceptance. But eventually…
- The people I tried to please, betrayed me
- My efforts failed, and people judged me
- My striving fell short, and I judged myself
This, of course, was no surprise to my creator, and He was with me on every step of that journey, allowing me the gift of experiencing true grace and pure love.
It was through these experiences that I was brought to a place of complete surrender and learned to trust the truths of His word and embrace this life changing realization that that which I was pursuing… I already had.
Created for His glory
When we stop striving to find our purpose and instead melt into the saving grace of God, we can then embrace that we are born with purpose and created for His glory. We can focus our actions and energy to live out HIS purpose for our lives ON purpose and WITH purpose.
Elohim – my creator, who made this day and all that it contains for YOUR GLORY… I rejoice not because this day is all I want it to be but because it is one more day designed and planned by YOU, for Your great purposes. Even if this day holds disappointments for me, I will search for and focus on the glory of Your perfect creation. There I will find joy… and in You I can rejoice!
This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. –Psalm 118:24
Here on purpose for His purpose!
