Embracing Our Purpose

Purpose

It excites – causing us to greet each day with enthusiasm, ready to hit the ground running.

It drives – with a burning in your gut to keep going, to keep trying, and never give up.

It inspires – opening our thoughts to creative ideas and bigger dreams.

Living with purpose by definition means we are living with determination to reach a desired result. This demands that, in order to live with purpose, we stop and ask ourselves…

What desired result am I determined to achieve?

Our purpose, the reason we were created, is to glorify God.  I share more about that here, so give it a read first if you’re not familiar with how I define purpose according to scripture.  It’s important to embrace that truth first before moving on.

em·brace

verb

to take or receive gladly or eagerly; accept willingly:

If we hold tightly to one thing, we struggle to embrace something else. We have to make room for that which we want or need to embrace by letting go of something else. By definition, embracing something means we receive it gladly, so by default, we are ready to let go of whatever is getting in the way of us being able to embrace what we truly desire.

We are born with a burning desire for purpose, but as long as we hold onto the things that we perceive as our purpose, we cannot embrace our true purpose.  Without complete surrender to Adonai, our Lord and Master, we struggle to embrace the simplicity of this truth that we were all created with one purpose, to glorify Him.

Until we embrace this truth about our purpose, our soul is never completely satisfied. The pursuit for fulfillment in finding our purpose is ongoing, no matter how many great things we accomplish, accolades we receive, or mountains we conquer.  Until we begin doing the things we are called to do for the glory of God, our soul longs for more.

Embracing the truth that are all created with one purpose, to glorify God, starts with the realization that we all fall short of the glory of God. There is not one of us who can measure up to the pure perfection of Elohim, our creator. In a world where acceptance is preached over conviction of sin, we can be lulled into thinking we are perfect just as we are and be blinded to our need for grace. We can be deceived into thinking that no matter what we do, we are perfectly acceptable as we are and have no need of grace.  Ironically, this is an imperfect version of acceptance.

The good news, no, the best news of all is that there is a pure and perfect acceptance offered to all of us. We are perfectly accepted by God when we acknowledge we are not perfect.

The world offers ‘imperfect’ acceptance,

God offers ‘perfect’ acceptance.

Imperfect acceptance feeds a judgmental spirit with thoughts of comparison (I’m more accepting of others than you because…) which leads to a lifetime of seeking validation from others and chasing purposeful fulfillment for an unsatisfied soul.

Perfect acceptance transforms a judgmental spirit into one that loves everyone where they are (I accept you because you are a creation of God) and creates a longing to glorify God so that we all find our way to grace and a completely satisfied soul.

This perfect acceptance from God is the gift of grace. It is God sending His son to the cross to pay for our sinful thoughts, words and actions so He can embrace us and empower us with His Spirit to fulfill our purpose to glorify Him.

I praise our Lord and Savior that He pursues us until we no longer settle for imperfect acceptance and receive His perfect acceptance.

When we embrace our purpose with a heart surrendered to the one who created us, living ON purpose WITH purpose brings joy to us and delights our God.

Do Something On Pur•pose today...

  • Ask God to reveal anything you are embracing right now that you need to let go of to make more room for Him and His purpose for you.
  • When you think about the day or week before you, how does knowing your purpose (to glorify God) cause you to greet each day with enthusiasm, ready to hit the ground running?
  • When you think about struggles you might be facing right now, how does knowing your purpose drive you with a burning in your gut to keep going, to keep trying, and never give up?How does knowing your purpose inspire you and open our thoughts to creative ideas and bigger dreams?
